Citizenship
There are essentially 4 ways in which a foreign national can apply and acquire Cyprus Citizenship: (a) by naturalization, (b) by investing in various forms in Cyprus, (c) through marriage to a Cyprus citizen, and (d) due to Cypriot origins. Acquiring Cyprus citizenship give the legal right to a person, amongst others, to live and work in Cyprus as well as travel without any formalities within the EU.
Cyprus Citizenship by Naturalisation
A foreign national or EU citizen who completes seven years of legal residence in the Republic is eligible to apply for the citizenship provided that he resided legally and continuously in Cyprus during the twelve months preceding the date of the application. The last year of residing in Cyprus preceding the citizenship application is a continuous stay of 365 days in Cyprus and not a calendar year (January to December). The Council having the last word, finds it easier to approve an application provided that certain criteria are met, the most important being the proof of ‘intention to reside in the Republic’.
